Planting “Trees” in the Ocean! Farglory Life Insurance Initiates Ecological Restoration Program Targeting our Coral Reef Treasures
Surrounded by sea, Taiwan is home to one-third of the world’s coral reef species and was once known as the “Coral Kingdom”. However, affected by the extreme weather and rising sea temperatures in recent years, the corals in the neighboring waters are bleaching, resulting in incalculable damage to the environment. As a result, Farglory Life Insurance has taken the lead in initiating the ecological restoration program to plant coral reefs, and has joined hands with National Taiwan Ocean University to invest in “coral seeding”, which fulfils the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal SDG 14: Life Below Water.
Planting a “tree” in the sea
Farglory Life Insurance’s primary initiative to create a clear blue coral ocean was to “support coral farms and plant coral in the ocean”. Utilizing the corals’ characteristic of asexual reproduction, Farglory called on volunteers from Ocean Farmer to plant 200 coral seeds in the New Taipei City Marine Restoration Park located at the Fisheries and Fishing Port Affairs Management Office of the New Taipei City Government. These corals were protected and cared for by the team of Shikina Shinya, a professor at the Institute of Marine Environment and Ecology of National Taiwan Ocean University and a pioneer in coral restoration in northern Taiwan. Through artificial cultivation techniques, these corals were propagated and grew slowly in the safe environment of a breeding tank. Eventually they were returned to the waters off the Northeast Coast of Taiwan to continue growing, allowing the colorful coral sea to be restored and bloom once again.Planting a seed of thought
In addition to actively participating in ecological restoration, Farglory Life Insurance has also cultivated the idea of protecting the coral ecosystem in four remote schools in Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Pingtung. The project passed on knowledge of marine ecology to 200 schoolchildren, and painted coral bases that were then donated to National Taiwan Ocean University for use in coral restoration. Through these actions, Farglory is leading the next generation to think and take action together and to do their part for the undersea ecosystem of Taiwan.本項作為連結
